Brickman delivers an album filled with peaceful melodies that evoke
romantic images and intimate feelings. He considers himself a pop
songwriter, using piano-based instrumentals as a canvas, allowing him to
connect with mainstreamers on his sonic paintings of romantic longings. The
song "On the Edge" features a duet with cellist Martin Tillman, while other
selected tracks include string and percussion. The album closes with the
title track "By Heart," highlighted by Laura Creamer, an exciting
vocalist known for her work with Bruce Hornsby and Michael Bolton.
"By heart" is a succinct and accurate appraisal of a lovely, low-key
album of 11 piano solos (with occasional string embellishments) and a
concluding vocal track. By Heart paints a picture of Brickman as a
thoughtful, sometimes pensive, creative soul who quietly cherishes
idyllic romantic notions yet reluctantly, realistically, acknowledges
that they may forever lie just beyond his ever-hopeful grasp. Such a
realization, though, does not blunt Brickman's expressive longing at the
keyboard, and By Heart unfolds as a touching, clear-eyed chronicle of a
restless but gentle heart. The title track, with little-known Laura Creamer
handling vocals, offers some of the weakest production yet strongest
emotional clout of nearly any vocal selection Brickman has since
recorded. Revealing and rewarding listening.

Pianist Jim Brickman would like you to picture a world that is prettier,
more contented, and more emotionally in-tune than the world you probably
see through your windshield each day. It may be just wishful thinking,
but Brickman's music indulges in the dream anyway, and those inclined to
share in the momentary journey will find it is a lovely, often romantic
ride. The Cleveland-born pianist understands his strengths and sticks close
to the white keys in this very inviting 13-track collection. Brickman
specializes in crafting pop-influenced melodies that, to his credit, aim
for the heartstrings through intelligence and subdued elegance rather
than schmaltz. The album's most circulated cut is its lone vocal selection,
the soft-pop hit "Valentine," sung by Martina McBride, but all 12
instrumentals are individual jewels of understated beauty. "Secret Love,"
for example, opens with sparkling, hopeful passages, followed by the
hesitancy and uncertainty of a muted cello, resolved by a flood of
expressive flourishes that beautifully convey pent-up romantic release.
Even his reworking of "Fr¡¼re Jacques" suggests a thoughtfulness that can
make listeners rethink the tune themselves. A great choice for clear-eyed
romantics.

Jim Brickman's 1997 holiday package is all satin bows and glowing hearth
embers, precisely the approach his romantically inclined legions would have
wished him to take. Those with less sentimental ears might argue that at
times the pianist's approach is a touch too sweet. "Joy to the World" would
be more affecting as a solo work, for instance, and we could have done
without the strings and music-box embellishments heard in "Angels." Yet
Brickman compensates by delicately tracing a path to our heart-of-hearts in
the album's two superb, nonholiday originals, "Fireside" and "Winter
Peace." Three vocal tracks surface here: a breathy Kenny Loggins sings on
the album's obligatory lullaby ("Starbright"), the female gospel group
Point of Grace takes a bow ("Hope is Born Again"), and country vocalist
Collin Raye performs a heart-clutching duet with Susan Ashton on the
title track. It's not Brickman's finest record, but it's a very pretty
one.

®öº©¿ûµ^] Jim Brickman - Destiny [1999]
Anyone soul-stirred by the Cleveland native's 1997 breakthrough Picture
This will find the simple, mood-enhancing pleasures of Destiny ¡X a rich,
accomplished work with not one throwaway cut ¡X a similarly perfect
soundtrack to the big romantic interlude in the midst of life's day to
day chaos. While Brickman delves a bit more into up-tempo smooth jazz
playing over Herb Alpert's brisk, rising harmony lines on the strutting "
Rendezvous," for the most part he sticks to his stock in trade:
seductive, three-minute long pop songs that range in mood from happy-go-
lucky ("Part of My Heart," "Meant to Be," "By Chance") to lilting and
melancholy ("Crooked River"). Brickman says he aims to lift the listener
into a journey of self-realization and provides the starting points with
simple word or phrase titles like "Remembrance" or "Crossroads." He's
rarely inclined to use outside harmonic enhancement on these pieces, but
Richard Dodd's weeping cello accents on "Bittersweet" add a deeper
sensitivity.
Brickman's facile way with a pop piano hook has translated to huge
success on the adult contemporary charts, where has scored vocal hits
with Martina McBride ("Valentine") and Susan Ashton and Collin Raye ("The
Gift"). While Carly Simon's kindly performance on "Hush L'il Baby" keeps
Brickman's tradition of including childhood nursery rhymes on every project
intact, any of the other three instantly hummable vocal tunes (think
power ballads lite) are candidates for first dance wedding songs that can
endure through the ages. Michael W. Smith's raspy voice adds thrust to "
Love of My Life," while young R&B stars Jordan Hill and Billy Porter make a
convincing vow on the soaring title cut. "Your Love" sung by Michelle
Wright is, lyrically and melodically, the perfect sequel to "The Gift."

AMG Review by Bryan Buss
After four gold albums and two number one adult contemporary singles,
pianist Jim Brickman released this live CD that serves as a pseudo
greatest-hits collection. The problems are that the vocals are performed by
different artists and not all the hits are here. Released to coincide
with a PBS special, Brickman is joined by Olivia Newton-John (who fills
in for Martina McBride on Valentine and who co-wrote "Change of Heart" with
him), Donny Osmond (who fills in for Michael W. Smith on "Love of My Life"
), saxophonist Dave Koz, keyboardist David Benoit, violinist Tracy Scott
Silverman, and longtime Brickman collaborator, singer Anne Cochran.
Brickman's vocal-accompanied ballads are certainly competent for the A/C
field, but with maudlin, sophomoric lyrics like "You are the half that made
me whole/you are the anchor of my soul" (in The Love I Found in You on
which he performs vocals and sounds eerily like Michael W. Smith), it's
clear that his real strengths are his instrumentals. Though they lack the
melodramatic pizzazz of some of the best new age music, that understatement
is valued, and they are mostly evocative and always pretty, with "Rocket to
the Moon" and "Freedom" being standouts.

]¡G[®öº©¿ûµ^] Jim Brickman - Peace [2003]
Peace, Jim Brickman¡zs second collection of holiday-themed music, is
largely a mirror image of his first (The Gift, released in 1997). Both
feature a mix of solo piano works, augmented piano selections (involving
oboe, strings, synthesizers, a pop-jazz ensemble, or some combination
thereof) and glossy, radio-ready pop vocal productions. To some ears, the
polished sheen of the vocal tracks (four are included) may infringe on
the more contemplative mood of Brickman¡zs instrumental tracks, the way a
city¡zs after-dark glow can seep into your view of a deep night sky¡zs
canopy of stars. Still, as with The Gift, Peace is an attractive mood-
setter for the season. Brickman¡zs best arrangements will resonate with
aer¡zs introspective sensibilities. "Jingle Bells," "Away in a Manger," and
"We Three Kings," for instance, all receive slow-building, reflective
treatments that might prod you into pondering deeper meanings. A pair of
nonholiday originals, "Early Snowfall" and "Blessings," achieve the same
heart-nudging effect. As for the vocals, The Blind Boys of Alabama
reinforce the finger-snapping, muted-trumpet, ¡y40s-swing vibe of "Let It
Snow;" Kristy Starling takes a sweetly romantic turn on "Sending You a
Little Christmas;" and country¡zs Collin Raye (also featured on The Gift)
earnestly conveys the clear-eyed optimism of the title track.
